According to government statistics, in England between June 2020 and June 2021, the Fire and Rescue Service attended 149,779 house fires; of these, there were 249 fire-related fatalities. Smoke alarms are essential for keeping you safe by alerting you in the event of a fire.
There should be a minimum of one smoke alarm per floor, with a heat detector ideally in the kitchen and recommended one smoke in your living room too. You should fit enough alarms to cover all areas where a fire could start. Make sure they are tested regularly – ideally every week – and are replaced every 10 years or before the date stated on them, whichever comes first!
